Location & what to see
Wang Lang sits on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya River, in the Siriraj neighbourhood of Bangkok, and the area has a local, residential feel. Narrow lanes, the Wang Lang Market and the Siriraj Hospital complex give the neighbourhood its daily rhythm. Several small medical museums are part of the hospital complex, including the Siriraj Medical Museum, and the riverside piers are close by for crossings to the other bank. The streets behind the riverside are quieter than the tourist centre of the old city across the water.
The river is the main link to the sights across the water: Tha Wang Lang pier is 200 m away, and boats cross to the old city, where the Grand Palace is 850 m from the hostel. Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, is 1.3 km away on this side of the river, and Khaosan Road, the backpacker street of the old city, is 1.4 km away.
A good first day can start with the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Chetuphon, known as Wat Pho, then continue by boat back across the river to Wat Arun. In the afternoon, Khaosan Road and the lanes of the old city are an easy change of pace, and the walk back along the riverside makes a quiet end to the day.
