The Jim Thompson House, 2.3 km away, is a complex of traditional Thai teak houses filled with art collected by the American silk entrepreneur Jim Thompson. Wat Arun, 5 km away, is a riverside temple across the Chao Phraya River, known for its tall, tiered prang. The Chatuchak Weekend Market, 8 km away, is one of the largest weekend markets in Bangkok.

A day could begin at the Grand Palace and Wat Arun, then move to the Jim Thompson House and the shopping around Siam, and end at the Patpong Night Market after dark. The Chatuchak Weekend Market works better as a separate trip, since it is further out.
