The Grand Palace, 1.7 km away, and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Phra Kaew, make up the royal complex in Rattanakosin, while Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, lies 2.5 km away on the far bank of the Chao Phraya.

A day could begin at the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, then continue by river boat to Wat Arun. Back in Banglamphu, the evening can be spent on Khaosan Road or in the lanes around the old temples, where the street life carries on into the night. Jim Thompson House, the former home of the silk entrepreneur, is a further stop for those who want more of the city's history.
