Wat Phra Chetuphon, home to a large reclining Buddha, is also in the old city, and Wat Arun stands on the far bank of the Chao Phraya. Getting around the old city is mostly on foot or by boat along the river, while the Sam Yot MRT station is 1.5 km away. The Chatuchak Weekend Market, 6.6 km away, is a longer trip across the city.

A good first day starts with a walk from Khaosan Road to the Grand Palace and the temples of Rattanakosin, then a crossing of the river to Wat Arun. In the afternoon, you can head out to the Chatuchak Weekend Market, which is open at weekends, for a longer trip across the city. Khaosan Road is a short walk back for dinner, with its street-food stalls and bars.
