Mae Haad is the ferry village on Ko Tao, a small island in the Gulf of Thailand known for diving and snorkelling. Its streets around the pier are lined with dive shops and guesthouses, and the beach is a short walk from the apartment. The Koh Tao Health Promoting Hospital is in the village too, so the basics are close at hand.

Haad Ao Mae beach is 250 m away and the Lomprayah Koh Tao Pier, a ferry terminal, is 150 m away. Sairee Beach, the best-known beach on the island, lies further along the coast and can be reached on foot or by scooter. Koh Nang Yuan, a group of small islets joined by sandbars and known for its viewpoint, is reached by boat from the island and makes a good half-day trip.

Ko Tao has no airport, and the nearest one, Samui Airport, is 65.1 km away on Koh Samui, so the last part of the journey is by boat. Divers and snorkellers can spend the day on the reefs around the island, and the Sairee Viewpoint, 1.6 km away, looks over Sairee beach and Koh Nang Yuan. The island is one of Thailand's best-known places to learn to dive.
