The beach road is where most of the local life happens, with boat-trip operators, tour desks and street-food stalls along the sand. Ao Nang is on the mainland, so the islands and the peninsulas across the bay are reached by boat from the piers rather than by car.

Noppharat Thara Beach is 1 km away, and the Ao-Nang Landmark Night Market is 1.3 km away. Railay, a peninsula of limestone cliffs and beaches, is 5.4 km away and reached by longtail boat, while Phra Nang Cave, 6.6 km away, is also reached by boat. Poda Island, 8.8 km away, is likewise a boat trip from the piers.

A day can begin with a longtail boat to Railay and end at the Ao-Nang Landmark Night Market or on the beach road in the evening. Boat trips can be cancelled in rough sea, so keep a spare day for the islands. Krabi International Airport lies on the mainland, so the last part of the journey from there is by road.
