The streets behind the beach hold restaurants and shops, and Krabi International Airport is the usual point of arrival by air. It is a lively place for a beach holiday rather than a quiet village.

Railay, the peninsula reached mainly by longtail boat, lies 4.6 km away, and Phra Nang Cave is close to it. Poda Island, 9.6 km away, is also a boat trip from Ao Nang, while Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea), 11.7 km away, is a hilltop temple in the Krabi area. The Ao-Nang Landmark Night Market is in the town itself, so dinner and a stroll are easy to combine with a day at the beach.

A typical day can combine a morning at the beach with an afternoon boat trip to Railay or one of the islands, returning to the town for the evening market. Evenings are the time for the night markets and for walks along the beach road. In the rainy months, boat trips can be cancelled when the sea is rough.
