The shoreline is sandy and the village character is still visible along the beach road, and the pace is slower than in Patong. Phuket International Airport is about 21 km away, and because the island is linked to the mainland by a bridge, the last stretch to Kamala is by road.

A typical day could start with a swim at Nakalay Beach, then continue to the elephant farm or to the Kamala Night Market, which opens in the evening with food stalls and local goods. The Bang Wan Waterfall sits in the hills inland from the beach, a quieter alternative for a few hours. For a separate day trip, the Big Buddha on its hilltop and Wat Chalong, one of the most important temples on the island, are both worth the journey.
