The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is inside the Grand Palace complex, so the two sights are visited together. Wat Arun, the riverside temple with its tall, ornate spire, stands across the Chao Phraya at 2.5 km, and Wat Phra Chetuphon, better known as Wat Pho and home to a reclining Buddha, is about 2 km away. The Sam Yot MRT station makes the metro easy to reach.

A day can begin at the temples of Rattanakosin, move on to the Democracy Monument and the museums of the old city, and end with a stroll along Khaosan Road. The Chatuchak Weekend Market is much further away and is worth a separate trip on a weekend, when it is open.
