Siam Paragon, a large shopping centre, is 4.3 km away. The Grand Palace, 8.8 km away, is the most visited sight in old Bangkok, with the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in its grounds. Chatuchak Weekend Market, a large weekend market on the other side of town, takes a longer trip across the city, so it suits a dedicated morning rather than a stop on the way.

A good day out starts on the Skytrain into the centre, with Siam Paragon for shopping and Jim Thompson House, the former home of the American entrepreneur who revived Thai silk, for a look at traditional Thai architecture. In the evening, Khaosan Road, the backpacker street near the old city, is a short trip from the sights of the old town.
