A good plan is to start in the Fisherman's Village, swim at Hat Bang Rak and visit the Big Buddha in the afternoon. Na Muang Waterfall, further inland, makes a good half-day outing for anyone who wants to see the island's forested hills. The Bophut Food Market, 1.3 km away, is a place to try local dishes. Koh Samui is an island, so the last part of a trip from the mainland is by boat, while the island's own airport means flying in is the simplest way to arrive.
