The Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation, which works to protect sea turtles on this coast, is also in the area, so the beach has a conservation side as well as a leisure side.

A good day starts with a swim at Mai Khao Beach, then a walk along the coast to Nai Yang Beach and an afternoon at Sirinart Naiyang Park, with the night market for the evening. Patong, 23.6 km away, is where Phuket's nightlife is concentrated, and a car or taxi is the practical way to reach it. Evenings in Mai Khao are quiet by comparison, so a night out in Patong is best planned as a separate trip, with the return journey in mind.
