The beach is known for sea turtles, which come ashore to nest on its sand, and the coast here is part of a national park.

Nai Yang Beach, a further stretch of sand along the coast, is 4.9 km away. The Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation, a sea turtle conservation centre, is 3.6 km away, and visitors can learn there about the turtles that nest on Mai Khao's sand. Sirinart Naiyang Park, a protected coastal area, lies in the same stretch of the coast.

A day here could start with a walk on Mai Khao Beach, continue with a visit to the turtle foundation, and finish in the evening at the Ni Yang Night Market, 4.5 km away. The Airplane Viewpoint at Mai Khao Beach is a spot where aircraft come in low over the sand as they approach the airport.
