The old city sights are a short trip away. The Grand Palace is 1.6 km away, and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew), inside the palace complex, is 1.5 km away. Wat Arun, a riverside temple with a tall tower on the Chao Phraya, is 2.4 km away. Wat Sam Phraya Worawihan, a temple close to the hostel, adds a quieter stop, and the Pipit Banglamphu History Museum is also nearby.

A full day can start at the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, then take a boat across the river to Wat Arun before returning to Khaosan for an evening meal in the lanes. For a larger outing, the Chatuchak Weekend Market is 6.8 km away and is a weekend market, so it is worth planning around the weekend. Getting around on foot covers much of the area, and a taxi or the MRT is practical for longer trips.
