The Jim Thompson House, a museum of traditional teak houses and Thai silk, is 1.7 km away and makes a calm half-day visit. The Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of the largest markets in Bangkok, is 4.4 km away and is worth a full day, especially on a weekend.

A good first day could start at the Grand Palace, 5.2 km away, where the Temple of the Emerald Buddha stands inside the palace complex. From there it is a short trip across the Chao Phraya River to Wat Arun, which sits on the opposite bank. Don Mueang International Airport, 18.4 km away, is the nearer of Bangkok's two main airports.
