Wat Arun, 2.1 km away on the riverbank, is one of Bangkok's best-known temples, with a tall central prang rising above the water. The Grand Palace is 2.3 km away on the far side of the river, and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha stands within its grounds. Don Mueang International Airport is 23.2 km away.

A good day mixes the temples on both banks: begin at Wat Arun, cross the river to the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, then return to Thonburi for a meal. Chatuchak Weekend Market is a much longer trip, so it is better kept for a separate day with time to browse.
